How to perfectly measure your container volume

1. Tare the Scale

Place your empty jar on a digital kitchen scale and press the tare/zero button to ignore the container's weight.

2. Fill with Water

Fill the jar with water up to your desired wax fill line. Remember to leave about 1/2 inch of space for the wick and safety!

3. Record Volume

The weight of that water in ounces (oz) is your container's volume. Enter this exact number into the calculator above.

Understanding Wax Densities

You might wonder why we multiply the water volume by 0.86. That's because wax is lighter (less dense) than water! While this rule applies generally, different waxes behave slightly differently.

Wax TypeCharacteristicsAverage Fragrance Load
Natural Soy WaxEco-friendly, slow burn. Requires 1-2 weeks of curing for best scent. Can suffer from "frosting" or bumpy tops.8% - 10%
Paraffin WaxIncredible scent throw (hot and cold). Takes dyes beautifully. Petroleum byproduct, requires careful wicking to avoid soot.10% - 12%
Beeswax100% natural, emits a warm glow and subtle honey scent. Very dense, requires larger "square braid" wicks. Hard to scent.Max 6%
Parasoy BlendThe best of both worlds! Smooth tops from paraffin, longer eco-burn from soy. Great scent throw.8% - 12%

How to Calculate Candle Wax

Because wax is less dense than water, 1 fluid ounce of water volume equals approximately 0.86 ounces of wax by weight. This calculator takes the water volume of your jars, applies the density conversion, and multiplies it by the number of containers to give you the exact wax weight needed.

Tips for Candle Making

Always melt 5-10% more wax than you think you need to account for spills, testing, and top-offs to fix sinkholes. Also remember that fragrance oil will add some volume, so your actual fill line might be slightly higher.
